The Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Freising, Germany, is organising its annual conference on 27 and 28 May 2003 entitled:

Packaging Food and Pharmaceuticals – Science for Compliance.

Sensitive contents such as foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals have common requirements: they put high demands on packaging materials and require a high level of product safety. The ongoing European harmonisation of regulatory matters in the area of packaging materials is posing a considerable challenge for the packaging industry. It requires continuous attention being put on developments in this field and this is particularly so for the global economies. Applied science can play a key role in bringing together the industrial efforts on product safety and quality assurance and the regulatory work undertaken by the EU and by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA. Appropriate implementation of research results offers a powerful and cost efficient tool, even for global harmonisation efforts.

The conference will give an overview of the current regulatory and legislative position and will present the views of different industries. The focus will put on ongoing research programmes, activities and examples of successful implementation. The first part of the conference includes key lectures with participants from the European Commission, the European Commission Joint Research Centre and the American Food and Drug Administration. The second part of the conference will deal with the packaging of pharmaceutical products and medical devices. Experts from the plastics and paper industries as well as Fraunhofer researchers will give an overview of successful transfer of research studies into industrial migration testing and packaging development.
Now, at the start of the EU 6th framework programme, the conference should stimulate debate and promote future joint applied research work for the benefit of industry and consumers.

The detailed conference programme can be found on our website:

The conference is directed at all companies involved in the manufacture of packaging materials as well as companies that package foods and pharmaceutical products.

The Fraunhofer IVV has many years of experience of contents/packaging interactions and trace analysis. The Fraunhofer IVV develops accredited test methods, actively participates in European and national standardisation bodies and contributes to legislation.

The conference will be held in English. The venue for the conference is Erding, close to Munich Airport.
