    Fan Rotor Blades

    Good morning everybody!

    We have a fan with a 1500mm diameter by 400mm wide rotor and it rotates at around 2000 rpm. The blades are manufactured from plasma cut hard faced plate, but the wear life is less than 6 months.

    Does anyone have any ideas, or experience, that might enable us the increase the life of the rotor blades?

    Good afternoon Jessica,

    The tips or your fan blades are moving at the rate of 157 meters per second and I've never been able to makes ceramic fan blades operate at tip speeds in excess of 80 meters per second, with silica sand present.

    It may be that you are currently using the best solution, unless someone else knows different. If someone does know of a better solution than hard faced plate for high speed fan blades, then I would like to know what it is.

    Just out of interest, does your fan use paddles blades like the ones in the attached photo?

    Are you having wear problems in the fan casing?

    Good morning everyone!

    Nice pictures Mike!

    Our rotors are the centrifugal type with suction from the side.

    Yes, we do have wear in the casing and we change the liner plates once a year. It would be great if we could make the fan blades last a full year too.

    The paddle blades in your picture look quite large. What size are they and why are they lined with ceramic rather than hard faced plate? Is it usual to fit ceramic liners to fan casings?

    Good afternoon Jessica,

    The paddle rotor in the picture is 1500mm in diameter and the blades are 350mm wide. The blades were originally manufactured from hard faced plate, but like your fan blades, they were wearing out quite quickly. The rotor speed is 900 rpm, equating to a tip velocity is 70 metres per second.

    The fans are used in power station coal exhausters. The main reason why ceramic linings are necessary is that the power station decided to use imported coal with a higher silica content than the locally produced coal.

    I have attached a photo of a ceramic lined casing. 13mm thick ceramic is used on the sides and 25mm thick, full width, curved ceramic bookend tiles are used along the wrapper plate. The bull nose section, at the wrapper split, is manufactured from a one-piece ceramic casting - I have a photo's of it somewhere; can't put my hands on for the moment, though.

    We also provide wear resistance solution in fan blades against severe abrasion and impact in various impact by fixing laminated wear plate to ASTM specification A 532 type 2 with Chromium 14 to 18%and Molybdenum 2.5 to 3.5 %, metallurgical bonded having hardness 700 Brinell to a mild steel backing plate.     Industrial fan blades

    I would be happy to look at your wear problems and help propose alternative materials for your wear. I have tested 3 types of tungsten carbide and it has performed extremely well in severe applications. email me and we can discuss this.
